High above a beautiful pine covered ridge live the women of the women's cooperative of El Cerro, Nicaragua make this special pine needle basket. The clean gentle scent of pine may linger for months. These lovely women harvest the pine needles, then begin the long process of weaving baskets by hand. Thousands of pine needles can make up one basket. Although it can take a woman a full week to complete one of the larger baskets, all the Artisans are paid according to Fair Trade federation standards.
The women's cooperative was formed several years ago with the help of a Dutch organization and today continues to flourish. The purchase of these decorative pine needle baskets helps continue this art form and provides an excellent incentive to good forest management. This product is made from recycled, sustainable or indigenous materials.
